Two awards for MAN Truck & Bus at the ceremony of “European Transport Award for Sustainability 2020” in Munich, Germany. The all-electric MAN eTGM distribution transport vehicle wins the “electric truck” category. In the “vans and delivery trucks” category the electric MAN eTGE is Europe’s most sustainable vehicle.
- As part of the Corporate Responsibility strategy, MAN assumes responsibility along the entire value chain
- The awards are being presented by the specialist newspaper “Transport” for the fifth time
“Transport” newspaper has presented the European Transport Award for Sustainability for the fifth time. Every two years, the awards give recognition to companies and products from the commercial vehicle industry which combine economic success with social responsibility and environmental protection in a special way – and whose sustainable actions lead to additional growth and prosperity. MAN Truck & Bus received the coveted awards in two categories: the MAN eTGM was able to impress the jury in the “electric truck” category and the MAN eTGE beat the competition in the “vans and delivery vehicles” class.
MAN eTGM: the electric truck for transportation in urban areas
In terms of local emissions and noise generation, the MAN eTGM fulfils all essential requirements posed by inner-city deliveries of the future.
The all-electric MAN eTGM distribution vehicle is powered by a 264-kW electric motor which provides a maximum torque of 3,100 Nm. Auxiliary units such as power steering, air compressors and the air-conditioning system are operated electrically, are controlled as required by the energy management system and are thus energy-saving. By means of brake energy recovery (so-called “recuperation”) the kinetic energy of the vehicle when coasting is converted into electrical energy and returned to the battery storage. This technology can increase the range considerably. The power for the truck is delivered by high-performance lithium-ion batteries from the Volkswagen Group.
MAN eTGE: all-electric van for inner city deliveries
The all-electric version of the MAN van has been available for purchase since 2018. The panel van in the high-roof variant features nearly eleven cubic metres of cargo compartment volume, and the 3.5-tonne version brings a payload of around one tonne to the table. The MAN eTGE is charged via a 7.2-kilowatt AC wallbox, in about five and a half hours. Rapid charging from zero to 80 percent is possible within 45 minutes, if a DC charging station is available with a Combined Charging System (CSS) and 40 kilowatts of charging power. With appropriate care, the 36-kWh rechargeable battery only loses 15 percent of its capacity after around 2000 charging cycles.
A permanently activated synchronous motor is used for the drive system in the MAN eTGE. The three-phase motor is mounted right at the front on the drive axle in combination with the single-speed gearbox. This provides a maximum of 100 kilowatts of power, delivering around 50 kilowatts in continuous operation. The vehicle’s immediately available 290 Nm of torque ensures agile handling.
The MAN eTGE is also just as good as conventionally powered TGE vehicles in terms of safety. It is equipped with a parking assistance system including side protection, LED headlights, a multifunction camera, a rear-view camera, cruise control system and maximum speed limitation, and a surroundings monitoring system with city emergency brake function. The Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) is of course also on board.
Social commitment and corporate responsibility
Moreover, an additional criterion of the European Transport Award for Sustainability is social responsibility – which is also an integral part of MAN’s corporate strategy. With the Corporate Responsibility (CR) strategy, MAN assumes responsibility along the entire value chain. Five fields of action form the framework in terms of content here: products, production, supply chain, people, as well as society and integrity. The most recent example of this is the “Löweneuro” donation campaign which began this year.
“We’re incredibly happy about the two awards from the ‘European Transport Award for Sustainability’. They encourage us in our strategy for environmentally friendly and at the same time economical transport solutions, which also play a role in our social responsibility as a company,” says Christopher Kunstmann, Director of Finance & IT at MAN Truck & Bus Deutschland GmbH during the award ceremony in Munich.
