Scania’s programme to replace its entire model range within little more than a year, has taken another major step forward with the introduction of a new range for heavy duty applications, the XT, together with the first versions of the low-datum P-series cab and the remaining middle-weight G-series cab variants.
This just leaves a few niche versions to complete the rejuvenation process.
Scania is establishing the new range by removing the Next Generation label from its previously launched products.
More than just a tipper model, the XT is a new flagship range to compete with the likes of the Volvo FMX, Renault Range-K and heavy duty Mercedes-Benz Arocs. Scania UK sales director Andrew Jamieson says: “It has been developed to fulfil the needs of operators working in the most demanding environments such as off-road, quarries and mines. As such, the range complements the construction industry models we are introducing by providing a dynamic and instantly recognisable flagship model for the most extreme operating conditions."
Eight specific applications are being targeted. These are tipper, mixer, hook-lift, skip-loader, concrete pump, mobile crane, flatbed with crane and heavy haulage.
The XT will be available with all four cabs in the Scania portfolio, S-, R-, G- and P-series. Apart from a distinctive grille badge, the most noticeable visual feature of the XT is the heavy-duty steel bumper, which extends some 150mm from the front of the cab, and is mounted so as to improve the approach angle. Other functional styling cues include reinforced ribbed mirror casings, light guards and a folding front number plate that conceals a towing eye rated at 40 tonnes. Non-slip steps lead into a cab furnished with XT branded seats and lipped rubber mats.
Coinciding with the XT launch, all Scania construction models are available with a variety of options to improve safety and efficiency. EBS with discs or drums, new two-leaf parabolic front springs and enlarged wheel housings to accommodate larger than normal wheel/tyre combinations, can be specified together with two different vertical exhaust stack options.
Driving control enhancements include the option of Clutch on Demand, and manual clutch facility on the Opticruise automated transmission where there is a need for fine control during manoeuvring on loose surfaces.
Noticeably absent at the launch on the new S- and R models, an electronic parking brake option is now available on all Scania models, including the XT. Its progressive application means it will automatically activate at low speed when the driver’s safety belt is undone or the door is opened.
In conjunction with the electronic parking brake, hill hold has been enhanced by the removal of a time limit for its activation, and automatic re-application in stop-start traffic queues.
